According to the pre-feasibility study report done by the government, this project is part of an overall infrastructure scheme stipulated by aviation regulation and therefore has a definite industry obliged specification.
Under the provisions of Vietnamese construction law, large scale public construction including civil air terminal, which has certain architectural requirements, must participated in an international competition or other similar bidding procedures.
The selection of an appropriate layout for Long Thanh international airport therefore needs to be done via an architectural competition.
Long Thanh International Airport is expected to be in Long Thanh district, Dong Nai province. The project is pursuing an airport grade 4F, as categorised by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The airport is not only a significant national terminal but also a major international transport hub in the region.
The expected capacity is 100 million passenger pa and 5 million tons of cargo pa. The scheme will be carried out in 3 phases. The first phase, which must be completed in 2025 latest, includes a runway and a passenger terminal as well as other ancillary items, and meets a prerequisite for 25 million passenger pa plus 1.2 million tons of cargo pa.
Phase 2 and 3 will then follow with a few more runways and terminals so that when completed, Long Thanh will have the aforementioned capacity of 100 million passenger pa and 5 million tons of cargo pa.
